Speech Therapy

Our aim is for our clients to speak and thrive

Everyday communication is essential. Speech and language abilities are needed for learning, comprehension, and communication. It is also an important aspect of our social and emotional development, especially for young individuals and children.

While speech pathology can be used by people who have no major diagnosed medical disorders, it is most commonly used to help children and adults with disabilities, communicate effectively since speech and language problems can limit their ability to reach their full potential.

Who needs speech therapy?

Children and adults with communication problems benefit from speech therapy. It can also help individuals who have trouble swallowing or hearing impairments.

A speech pathologist's role is to assess and treat people who may be struggling with:

What's the difference between a speech pathologist and a speech therapist?

There is absolutely no difference between the two. In Australia, the term "Speech Pathologist" is more commonly used as "Speech Therapist," and professionals are referred to as "Speech Pathologists" or "Speech-language Pathologists." However, all of these terms refer to a degree-qualified professional who works with clients to diagnose and treat difficulties with speech, language, social skills, and swallowing.

What is speech pathology?

Speech pathology is the study and treatment of communication and language problems caused by a disease, condition, or disorder. A speech pathologist is someone who studies and works in this profession.

Speech pathologists (sometimes known as speech therapists) are licenced health professionals who specialise in speech and language communication.

Speech pathologists assess and treat children and adults, assisting them with personal communication objectives so that they can take part in life and their community by expressing themselves and being understood.

This can be accomplished by enhancing the quality and sound of their speech, as well as employing hand and body gestures or other types of supported communication, such as image cards or visual signals.

Speech pathology not only focuses on communication skills but also on helping people who have difficulty swallowing food and drink by monitoring food consistency, creating varied oral movements of the lips and tongue, and employing eating and drinking modification devices.

Because speech pathology covers everything, it is referred to as SLP or speech-language pathology.

NDIS speech pathology

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian-wide scheme that gives assistance to persons with permanent and serious disabilities, often known as NDIS participants. The NDIS is intended to provide individuals with more choice and control over when, where, and how their financial assistance is provided.

The system comprises speech pathology, which falls under the NDIS funding support category known as "Capacity Building Support." The amount of NDIS funding that a participant may be eligible for is determined by the impact of their disability on a day-to-day basis, their current level of ability and capacity, the support networks they have in place, and their goals.

NDIS-licenced service providers, such as Sydney Health Clinic, can provide NDIS participants with speech therapy. When it's time to review your NDIS plan or arrange an assessment to become an NDIS participant, contact the NDIS about your speech and language problems and why you need this intervention to better your life.

Speech pathology can be supported under the NDIS if it is deemed reasonable and required and is administered by a qualified professional. Speech pathologists with the necessary abilities and training can provide services to NDIS participants under the NDIS. The NDIS will consider funding speech pathology based on the goals you set in your planning meeting or plan review. This is why it is essential to understand your objectives and be prepared for these meetings.
